Climb

I found a story online about ibexes climbing straight up a wall.  In looking at the photos, one word popped into my mind…”climb.”  I opened up Word, knowing a poem was coming…

For Alexandra:

“I can’t” she whispers; then hangs her head in shame
“It’s too hard” she moans, clutching tight her pain
“I might fall” she adds, secure in her future fears
“He’ll find me” she cries through her veil of tears

“You can” I claim, resolute in my conviction
”Yes, it’s hard,” I say, aware of her addiction
“You may fall” I agree, her journey will be hard
“No, he won’t” I argue, prepared to be her guard

Climb, sweet baby, climb
Climb on up and out of your pit
Climb, strong lady, climb
No woman deserves to be hit

Climb, sweet baby, climb
Climb straight up that wall
Climb, strong lady, climb
Time to run away from it all

“I can’t leave” she whimpers, afraid of what’s ahead
“What if…” she wonders if he’ll really leave her dead
“I know him” she trembles, memories of abuse
“I can’t climb” she reasons, thinking it’s no use

“You can” I counter, she’s stronger than she knows
“Don’t worry…” I soothe, her healing may be slow
“Yes, you do” I affirm, knowing he’ll never stop
“You can climb” I assure her, straight up to the top

Climb, sweet baby, climb
Climb on up and out of your pit
Climb, strong lady, climb
You don’t deserve to be hit

Climb, sweet baby, climb
Climb straight up that wall
Climb, strong lady, climb
You can do it; you won’t fall
